Related to Emperor Constantine X and Irene Doukaina, empress of Alexis I Komnenos.
A dominating woman who virtually rules the empire in the name of her husband.
Her son-in-law accused her of adultery which was believed by her husband. Alexios banished her to a convent in 1196. However her relatives convinced Alexios to recall her the next year.
Notes for Alexios III (Spouse 1)
Ruled 1195 to July 18, 1203.
Born in 1153, Alexios was the elder brother of Isaac II. His reign was marked by misgovernment and the increasing autonomy of provincial magnates. He was deposed by the Fourth Crusade and fled Constantinople, roaming Greece and Asia Minor, searching for support to regain his throne. He died in Nicean captivity.
