Notes for Nicholas PASTON
Rector of Kingswinford
Probable will at GRO
From John Baker
His will is dated 2.3.1621 and proven 11.10.1623. He was buried at Kingswinford 13.3.1622. There is no reference to his wife in the will so presumably she pre-deceased him. The booklet detailing the history of the Kingswinford Parish claims that Nicholas was appointed Rector in 1557 by Lord Dudley and that he survived in this post for an incredible 65 years. It is also claimed that he was the first legally married incumbent of the parish and that he was married at St. John the Baptist Church, Halesowen on 10th September 1598. Clearly he was married but, given the date on which his grandson was baptised, I think it is highly unlikely that he was the Nicholas Paston that walked down the aisle in 1598. I strongly suspect that the author of the booklet is confusing him with his nephew, also Nicholas Paston, who went on to succeed his uncle as Rector of the Parish.
