Notes for Sir Payne de ROET
Of Guienne (Aquitaine), King at Arms
Known as Paon de Roet and as Gilles Roet.
Father-in-law to Geoffrey Chaucer.
Was one of the two knights deputed by Queen Philippa at the Seige of Calais to conduct out of town the so-called Burgers of Calais.
Returned to Ghent probably in 1349 to serve the queen’s sister Marguerite, widow of the Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV.
His tomb was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. A modern monument in the crypt lists De Roet amongst the important graves lost.
