Also known as Hugh le Despenser “the elder”
Earl of Winchester. Lord le Despenser. The Complete Peerage vol.IV,pp.262-266.
Loyal to King Edward II, but was very unpopular with many of the other barons who did not support Edward.
Captured by Queen Isabella’s forces. Despite her objections, he was hung in his armour, beheaded and his body fed to the dogs. His head was put on display in Winchester.
