A family story indicates John and Joseph were not attending school, so they were sent by the authorities to an industrial school to learn a trade. The story is John was trained as a cook and Joesph as a tailor. Both put those skills to use as John worked in a restaurant in the winter when his farm did not occupy as much of his time. Joseph became a tailor for the film industry.
