It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Muriel Elizabeth McEwan on February 7, 2003 at the Mayfair Care Centre. Muriel was born at Netherhill, Saskatchewan on March 11, 1918. She was predeceased by her mother Susan Simpson in 1947 and her father Jack Simpson in 1951 and her sister Grace Adams in 2000.

Muriel received her primary and secondary education in Netherhill, Saskatchewan followed by her nursing education at St Boniface Hospital in Manitoba, graduating in 19??. She worked as a surgical nurse at St Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Muriel joined the medical services of the Royal Canadian Air Force as Flying Officer Nursing Sister Simpson. In the Air Force , she was posted to Calgary, Alberta, where she met her partner Flight Lt. DR. Howard McEwan. They were married in 1946. As a caring and compassionate person who was always full of energy and fun, Muriel enjoyed curling and excelled as a skip on her teams. They won many bonspiels in Alberta and Saskatchewan. She loved knitting sewing and weaving? and produced many beautiful works of art.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 12 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the Mountain View Funeral Home. [Calgary]

Passed away peacefully on December 27, 2012 in his 94th year. Predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Muriel (née Simpson), he will be sadly missed by his children, Len McEwen (Connie), Bonnie Silbert (Michael), Nancy Musgrave (David), Cathryn Brett (Ray) and Bill McEwen as well as his grandchildren, Cadence and Timothy Brett, Emily and Sharon Silbert (Giovanni), Tristan (Jill) and Travis Musgrave and Kendal Dickinson (Kevin). Born on a farm near Dauphin, Manitoba, Howard was the last surviving member of a family of nine children. He served in the RCAF during WWII and worked in the gold mines of northwestern Ontario in order to pay for his education. Howard established a medical practice in Calgary, which he continued for over 50 years. While starting in general practice, he moved into internal medicine early in his career specializing in the treatment of diabetes. He is credited with the establishment of the Diabetes Service in 1955, the Diabetes Day Care Centre in 1966 and the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program in 1969 at the Calgary General Hospital. Howard was keenly interested in medical education and was instrumental in founding the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and spent two years helping to write the new faculty's curriculum. Initially appointed Associate Professor of Medicine, he held the position of Clinical Professor of Medicine from 1974 until his retirement and also served on the university senate. In recognition of his contributions to diabetes education, the Calgary General Hospital established the Dr. Howard McEwen Diabetes Education Centre. Howard combined his love of the Calgary General Hospital with his passion for running and walking and raised a significant amount in donations through his participation in the annual Forzani's Run and other fund-raising initiatives. During his long and distinguished career, Howard served as President of the Calgary Medical Society and established its Calgary Area Advisory Council for Health and Hospitals. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the Physician of Merit Award from the Calgary General Hospital in 1990, the Certificate of Merit Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta in 1988, and both the Canadian Medical Association's Senior Member Award and the Alberta Medical Association's Senior-Life Member Award in 1985. He was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth Anniversary Silver Medal, the Alberta Medical Association Medal for Distinguished Service, the Canadian Diabetes Association Award for outstanding contributions and the College of Family Physicians of Canada Award for establishing two medical teaching units and he was named one of the Top 100 Alberta Physicians of the Century in 1999. In 2006, the University of Calgary Department of Medicine and Alberta Health Services initiated the Dr. Howard McEwen Award for Clinical Excellence in recognition of clinical excellence in the Department of Medicine. A Private Funeral Service is being held with family members. A celebration of the life of Howard McEwen will take place at the Glencoe Club at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013. The Glencoe Club is located at 636 - 29 Avenue S.W., Calgary, Alberta.
