Obituary
Frances Merle Simpson 1922 2010 The family of Merle Simpson is saddened to announce her passing on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010. Merle is survived by her daughter, Susan (Dave) Tosh; grandchildren, Erin, Carly (Brian DesGagnes), Alex (Rustee Apps), and Olivia; great-grandchildren, Dominic, William and Lauren DesGagnes; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mitchell and Dora Flanagan; brother-in-law, Rob Frazell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Merle is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Laura Flanagan; step-father, Francis Johnson; brothers, Dean, Gerald, and Larry Flanagan; sisters, Kay Bear, Jo Burkholder, Mae Paterson, Shirley Frazell, and Phyllis Gordon.
Merle was born on August 25th, 1922 in Delisle, SK to Frank and Laura Flanagan. Raised on a farm near Laura, SK, she attended school, grades 1-12, in Laura. In 1941 Merle moved to Saskatoon to play softball for the Saskatoon Pats. She married Jack Simpson in 1953 and a year later Susan was born. Besides being a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Merle was an avid curler, golfer, and 10-pin bowler. She enjoyed much success competing in these sports. She was a member of the Hub City Curling Club. She was a charter member of the Holiday Park Ladies Golf Club and served many executive positions at the club. She later became a member of the Waskesiu Ladies Golf Club where she served 20 or so years on the executive, and was later given an honorary life membership. Merle served on the Saskatchewan Ladies Golf Association and also on the Canadian and Saskatchewan Ladies Curling Associations. She served a year as a director of the Sutherland Curling Club when she was a member there. She served 5 years on the Board of Directors of the Waskesiu Lobstick Golf Club and worked for a number of years helping with the Lobstick tournaments. Merle played hostess to many visitors at her cottage in Waskesiu. There, friends and relatives enjoyed card playing, sing-songs, and good food. The "Slobstick " weekend was a favorite of hers. She was a founding member of the Waskesiu Cottage Owners Association. She loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. Merle certainly enjoyed life to the fullest until, unfortunately, 1999 when her health began to decline. Merle had severe arthritis and was finally confined to a wheelchair. Her three great-grandchildren brought her much joy at this stage of her life. Her last three years were spent residing at Extendicare Preston where she passed away peacefully with her daughter Susan at her side.
Merle's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Extendicare Preston and to Dr. B. Larson for their wonderful care of Merle. She will be missed. Donations may be made in Merle's name to the Arthritis Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan. etc.

After selling the business and retiring was involved with A & S Construction with Ken Auckland (Auckland and Simpson) a company which buried telephone cable.
Enjoyed curling and golfing.

John Douglas Simpson 1916 2007 SIMPSON Jack passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 01st, 2007 at Saskatoon City Hospital. Jack was born and raised in Netherhill on the family farm. After completing grade 12, he joined his father in drilling water wells. The family moved to Saskatoon and Jack attended Technical School. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served in WWII. After the war, he started Hub City Drilling Co., drilling for oil, with his father, his brothers and partner George Nesbitt. He met and married his wife, Merle in 1953 and a year later daughter, Susan was born. The success of Hub City Drilling Co., led to expansion and the formation of TriCity Drilling Co. After several years of drilling in Alberta and the N.W. Territories, Jack and his brothers sold the business. Jack spent his retirement years doing some traveling but mostly spent winters in Saskatoon (curling) and summers in Waskesiu (golfing). Jack is survived by his wife, Merle Simpson; daughter, Susan (Dave) Tosh; grandchildren, Erin, Carly (Brian DesGagnes), Alex and Olivia; great grandchildren, Dominic and William DesGagnes; brothers, Dick Simpson of Vernon, BC, George Simpson of Calgary, AB; sister, Jean Gilbert of Stettler, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, John and Susan Simpson; sisters, Muriel McEwen and Grace Adams. Jack will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family. Sincere thanks to the physicians and nurses of Saskatoon City Hospital, Dr. Mark Boechler, Jack's family doctor and Home Care. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 6th, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before the railway crossing). Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
