Edward Woodin Howkins of Victoria British Columbia gentleman died 1 September 1872 at or near Victoria Administration London 19 September 1894 to Emily Walker [his sister] (wife of Daniel Corrie Walker esquire) effects 2313 pounds 4 shillings 11 pence.
[Thus his estate was finalized 22 years after his death. His mother Marion died in 1893 and her estate was settled in the same year. Edward’s father Theophilus died in 1882 but his estate was not settled until a few months after Marion’s death. Edward’s estate was settled exactly 1 year after his father. Edward’s sister Emily Walker was the administrator for all 3 estates. Edward’s estate was larger than either of his parents.]
The following likely refer to Edward Woodin Howkins
From the Victoria Daily Standard, 1872 death notices
September 1, drowned in Victoria Arm,
Edward Hawkins [as spelled], 46, a native of England.
The British Columbia Death index lists him as
Edward Hawkins, age 53, died August 31, 1872, Victoria, registration number 1872-09-001145, BCA Number B13077, GSU number 1927287 [Notice the discrepancy in ages, he was 39 but the newspaper lists him as 46 and the index as 53.]
British Columbia Death Registrations.
Edward Hawkins, died August 31, 1872, about 53 years of age, laborer, born England, cause of his death by accidental drowning, informant Richard Copeland, Victoria, registered October 25, 1872, religious denomination Protestant. [This registration is almost 2 months after the death which seems very unusual, but was quite common at that time. The data is very sketchy, with an approximate age which seems way off, born location only a country and his religion specifics are general. even the spelling of his name is off.]

Died August 31 1872, Victoria, British Columbia
Burial Ross Bay Cemetery Victoria, British Columbia
Notes: death certificate indicates that he was approx. 53 years old. Accidental drowning
[This Edward Hawkins would possibly be buried in Section A. The original Anglicans section.]
There is an Edward Hawkins listed as being buried at the Old Burying Ground (Anglican Burial Register), located at Quadra and Meares Streets, (known as Pioneer Square, next to Christ Church Cathedral), reference number MC-999. There is only 1 other Hawkins at this same site a Sarah Hawkins. Whether this is Edward Woodin Howkins is unknown, but it might be worth investigating. This now seems unlikely.
Comments
There are many questions to be answered about Edward Woodin Howkins.
1. When did he emigrate to Canada?
2. Did he come directly from Britain or did he go somewhere else first.
3. What was his occupation?
4. Why did it take so long to settle his estate?
5. Was he married?
One of the problems answering these questions is there is a sparsity of records.
He does not seem to appear in the 1861 or 1871 England censuses.
Did he leave England before 1861?
British Columbia was not a part of Canada in 1871, so it was not included in the census. There was a census of Victoria taken that year but it only included names of heads of households and the number of other occupants. The transcription has no Howkins or Hawkins listed as head of household.
The only possible (not necessarily probable) record I can find is an Edward Hawkins who arrived on the ship Tynemouth in Victoria’s Inner Harbour on September 17 1862 after 99 days at sea from England. The ship was famous for being the first bride ship to arrive in Victoria with 60 poor young women and girls who endured arduous conditions. There were 232 other passnegers including an Edward Hawkins, no other information is stated. If this was the Edward Howkins in question, why was he not included in the 1861 census?
