Elizabeth Symondson (nee Melvin) graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1915.
Nursed Georges P. Vanier and they corresponded for a great many years. Vanier lost a leg during that attacks at Cherisy, France in 1918 and his Battalion the "Van Doos" was decimated. He went on to become Governor General of Canada and his son is the founder of L'Arche.

Melvin -Symondson World War 1 Nursing Sister
née Melvin. Born November 23, 1890, Teeswater, Ontario. Died August 30, 1967, St. Catherines, Ontario. In 1916 Elizabeth graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital (WGH) School of Nursing and joined the staff of No. 10 Manitoba Military Hospital, Tuxedo Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. By June 1917 she had enlisted as a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC). Overseas she was posted to No. 9 Canadian General Hospital, Shorncliffe, Granville Canadian Special Hospital, Buxton and No. 16 Canadian General Hospital, Orpington, all in England. After the war she worked as a special duty nurse in Dauphin, Manitoba before returning to Winnipeg to work in public health nursing. She later relocated to St. Catherines, Ontario with her husband Sydney Symondson
