[In letter to his wife dated October 21 1943 indicated he died as a result of being run over by a truck. This was incorrect]
Evidence:
“On the 21st of July, 1943, at approximately 1800 hours about 3 miles southeast of Leonforte, Sicily C38253 Signalman Simpson T. W. was extracting 3 rifles from a truck he was driving, which contained other stores. One of the rifles discharged. The muzzles were pointed towards symn. Simpson and he received a bullet through his chin.”

The 1st Canadian Infantry Division and the 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade (both part of General Montgomery's Eighth Army) sailed from the UK in June 1943 and landed in the south of Sicily July 10, along with their allies from the UK and the US. Agira was one of a number of Sicilian towns taken by the Canadians as they advanced northward across the mountains and over the island's hot, barren terrain toward the Strait of Messina. The town fell on July 28 -- three days after the resignation of Mussolini -- and following five days of hard fighting in what proved to be the Canadians' biggest battle of the Sicilian campaign. etc

Ellen Gilbertson
Ellen Gilbertson died Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, on August 14, 1984 at the age of 60 years. Funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Church, Sorrento on August 17 with the Reverend Enid Finn officiating. Cremation followed. Arrangemewnts were in the care of Bowers Funeral Home, Salmon Arm.
Mrs. Gilbertson was born at Netherhill, Saskatchewan on May 27, 1924 and lived at Calgary before moving to the Sorrento and Kamloops area in 1960.
She is survived by her husband , Jim of Sorrento; sons: Bob of Victoria and Gordon of Burnaby; three grandchildren: Shone, Robbie and Kim: parents Mabel and Jack Campbell of Brock, Saskatchewan; sister, Mae of Calgary and brother Melvin of Kindersley, Saskatchewan.
[Curiously no mention was made of her first husband.]
