Edward Augustus Freeman (1823-1892), historian; B.A. and probationary fellow, Trinity College, Oxford, 1845; honorary fellow, 1880; published “History of Architecture,” 1849; regular contributor to “Saturday Review,” 1855-78; examiner in school of law and modern history at Oxford, 1857-8, 1863-4, and 1873; honorary D.C.L. Oxford 1870, and LL.D. Cambridge 1874; served on royal commission to inquire into constitution and working of ecclesiastical courts, 1881-3; lectured in United States, 1881-2; regius professor of modern history at Oxford 1884-92; honourary LL.D. Edinburgh, 1884.
