The Chase Hospital Society was formed in 1910 when a hospital was constructed in Chase, B.C. by the Adams River Lumber Company to serve their employees and the community. The Board of Directors was comprised of two members appointed by the Adams River Lumber Company, three members appointed by employees of the Company, and two members appointed by the Province of British Columbia. Dr. Walter Scatchard was the first doctor of the hospital and he resigned this position in 1913. The Adams River Lumber Company took complete control of the Hospital Board in 1920. The hospital was closed and the Chase Hospital Society dissolved in 1927 when the Adams River Lumber Company ceased their lumber mill and logging operations.

Dr. Walter Scatchard, of Chase B.C. died at his home there April 13.
Born in Yorkshire, England in January 1861, Dr. Scatchard obtained his M.D. degree at London University. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1882, and in 1892 a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Midwifery. He was for some time house surgeon of Leeds hospital in Yorkshire. He came to Canada in 1907 and settled in Armstrong B.C. where he practised until 1910 when he moved to Chase, which town was then in the making. Besides his general practice, he was company physician and surgeon for the Adams River Lumber Company Ltd., and also was the doctor for the Adams, Squilax, Chase and Shuswap Indian reservations.
An ardent hunter and fisherman, Dr. Scatchard was a noted “wing shot”. A couple of years ago the octogenarian brought down 13 ducks with 11 shells. It was seldom he did not make every shot count. But perhaps his greatest thrill in the out-of-doors was when he landed a 19 pound trout after a two-hour struggle in Adams River. The kill was made with a 9-ounce rod and light fly-fishing tackle.
He is survived by his daughter and four sons.

In the same year [1910] the Company [Adams River Lumber Company] built its hospital, and the village gained Dr. Walter Scatchard, who became the community’s best-loved man. He left Yorkshire in 1909 [actually 1906 or 7] to farm in Salmon Arm in an attempt to improve his health, but climate alone seemed effective, so he was glad to revert to medicine. The eldest son remained in England, but he and his wife and their other children became an integral part of Chase, although Mowbray died in 1912, aged 17. Gerald C. (Jack) worked in Kamloops Sentinel print shop, for many years, Kemble and Charles later moved away, while Mildred (Ping) Gatin still continues community service in the village. In 1937 Mrs. Scatchard gave the infant Kamloops Museum many 1912 copies of the Chase Tribune, where they continue to be a great asset to the Archives.
