Death of Mr. F. Aikin-Sneath
Wel-Known Stroud Resident
We regret to announce the death which occurred yesterday of Mr. Francis Aikin-Sneath, J.P. of Halesmead, Pitchcombe, a member of a well-known local family and prominent public worker in the district.
Mr. Aikin-Sneath, who as the eldest son of the late Rev. and Mrs. T. Aikin-Sneath, formerly of The Lawn, Woodchester, had been ill for about two months and underwent an operation in Stroud Hospital. He returned to his home about five weeks ago and for the past fortnight had been seriously ill.
His death will be deeply regretted in the Stroud district, where he lived for many years.
Educated at Cheltenham College, Mr. Aikin-Sneath as a young man went to the Argentine, where he conducted an estancia, and on his return to England he took up residence at Burleigh Court, Brimscombe, where he remained until the end of the Great War. Subsequently he went to live at Tibberton Court, following he lived first at Weston-under-Penyard then London. Finally he returned to the Stroud district and resided since at Pitchcombe.
For many years Mr. Aikin-Sneath was a member of the Stroud Board of Guardians and the Stroud Rural District Council first as one of the representatives for Brinscombe and subsequently as the successor of Mr. Charles Mildred as the Pitchcombe representative. At one time he was persuaded to seek representation on the County Council and he unsuccessfully contested an election in the Bisley Division.
Grandmaster of Stroud Society
Keenly interested in politics, Mr. Aikin-Sneath gave active support to the Conservative cause, and was at one time the hon. treasurer of the Mid-Gloucestershire Conservative Association.
He closely identified himself with the Activities of the Stroud Holloway Original Benefit Society, and about three or four years ago he became the hon. treasurer of that organization. Later he was elected Grandmaster of the Society, and at the last annual meeting was re-elected to that office which he filled with distinction.
For many years Mr. Aikin-Sneath was a magistrate and until his illness he sat regularly on the Stroud Bench. He was a keen supporter of the Stroud General Hospital, and for a number of years he was a member of the General Council of that Institution.
Mr. Aikin-Sneath was twice married, and is survived by his widow, one son and four daughters, namely Mr. Bryan Aikin-Sneath, Miss Beryl Aikin-Sneath, Mrs. Philip Bartlett, Mrs. Robert Lowth and Mrs. Rogers. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Swynnerton, of Old House, Burleigh, Mrs. Walton and Miss Edith Aikin-Sneath of The Lawn, Woodchester.
His father died in 1911, and his mother in 1926. A brother, the Rev. Donald Aikin-Sneath was a minor canon in Westminster Abbey.
The funeral will take place on Thursday.
