Lt Noel Gilbert Bryan King Killed in Action 7th June 1917 

Noel was born in Avebury in 1886 where his father, Gilbert King was the assistant curate. Noel was the only child of Gilbert and his wife Jane. Gilbert became the vicar of St Barnabas in Easterton in 1895 and remained there for nearly 30 years before he moved to Cornwall.

Noel was educated at St Edwards School in Oxford, where he was a boarder. In 1911 he was teaching in a preparatory school in Hove, Sussex. He joined the 1st Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment, and served in France from 9th September 1916. 

In June the 1st Wiltshires were in the area of Wulverghem.  On 6th June they received notification that an attack was to be made on the Messines Ridge on 7th June, so they were busy preparing for that all day on the 6th. 

By midnight on 6/7th June they were ready in the assembly trenches at Wulverghem. At 3.10am several mines were exploded and an intense barrage commenced. At 3.40 they moved forward in artillery formation, and in spite of the fact that it was dark and smoke and dust obliterated all landmarks, the men kept good direction. 

At 4.50am the battalion charged the enemy trench. They met with some resistance from strong concrete dugouts, but they dealt with this successfully and all of the garrison was either killed or taken prisoner. 

Further garrisons were attacked successfully, but with a few casualties. The Wiltshires succeeded in all their objectives, but during the period between 7th June and 11th June they lost 2 officers, one of whom was Lt Noel Gilbert King from Easterton and 19 men, including Albert Pearce from West Lavington. They captured 148 prisoners and 7 machine guns. 96 men and 2 officers were wounded. 

Noel is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres.
