George Deakin Garmeson was born on 10 Oct 1887 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the 4th child, and second son of John Deakin Garmeson and his wife Emily Maud. His parents returned to England for his christening. His baptism was recorded on 20 Jul 1888 in the England and Wales Christening Records. It was also recorded in the Bishop’s Transcripts of St. Nathaniel’s Church in West Derby, Lancashire, England. The family moved to California in 1888, settling in San Francisco when George was a few months old.
Much of the information of George’s activities came from entries published in the San Francisco Directory and the Federal Census Records. George lived with his parents and siblings at 3526 21st Street, San Francisco according to the 1900 Federal Census report.. In 1905 George was living at 1014 Noe Street, San Francisco. He was 18 years old, and was working as a clerk for Levi Strauss Company. A newspaper article from the San Francisco Call dated 05 Nov 1906 described a new San Francisco Athletic League for Boys was formed at the Crocker School on Page Street. George Deakin Garmeson was among the three hundred boys named as participants. The premise of the organization was “Sound bodies make sound minds, and sound minds means success in the world”. George’s name also appeared in the newspapers on 10 Nov 1907 and 21 Dec 1907 as one of the runners in the annual seven mile cross country race. His running team was named the Slaplamat Indians.
By 1907, George lived with his parents at 722 Duboce Street. He was working as a clerk for the PAD Hardware and Steel Corporation. The 1908 San Francisco Directory record, however, showed he remained at the same address, but had become unemployed. By 1910, he was 23, and still living with his parents, but they had moved to 55 Alpine Street, San Francisco. George was single and now employed as a carpenter.
In 1915, there was an isolated record that had been filed by the California State Hospital for the Feeble Minded regarding the “escape” of the inmate George D. Garmeson. The record was written 20 Nov 1915, and stated “Granted leave by Medical Superintendant with relatives. Escaped afterwards.” George obviously returned there, because a final notation stated he was “Discharged” 15 Jun 1917, two years later. It is not known what George’s condition was that caused him to be hospitalized in this institution for a number of years. Although George had just been discharged from the California State hospital, he was still required to file an application to the Draft Board due to the start of World War I. His Draft application gave one possible clue regarding George’s health. It noted that he had a history of epileptic seizures. The document also described George as being tall, having a medium build, blue eyes and brown hair.
In 1920, George was 33 years old. He was still living at 55 Alpine Street, San Francisco. and worked as a carpenter. The California Voter Registration listed him as a Republican. He had a steady work history until 1930. The 1930 Federal Census showed George as unemployed. He was living at 349 27th Avenue, San Francisco, with his brother Bertram, Bert’s wife Mabel, and his brother Russell. In 1931-1933, George regained employment as a carpenter. In 1935, he was listed in the San Francisco Directory as a watchman for a wholesale bag Company.
George married late in life. A newspaper notification in the Oakland Tribune dated 10 Aug 1939 listed George Garmeson (50) engaged to Lillian A. O’Neil (50). Both resided at 259 6th St., Oakland, California. Lillian was born 30 May 1882 in Santa Cruz, California. In 1942, at the onset of World War II, George filed an application to the draft board, dated 25 Apr 1942. He was 55 years old, and listed his address as 1037A Minna Street, San Francisco. He was described as being 6 ft 4 inches tall, weighed 190 pounds, had brown hair, blue eyes and a sallow complexion. Under exemptions it is noted he had “no use of his left arm”, due to a prior stroke. It was interesting to note that George’s wife Lillian was registered as a Democrat in 1938, and after their marriage in 1939, George changed his party affiliation from “Republican” to “Democrat”.
By 1948, George started working as a laborer for the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in San Francisco Harbor. He remained employed there until his death in 1958. George died on 18 Feb, 1958 in San Francisco, at the age of 70. He was living at 689 S. Van Ness Avenue, with his wife Lillian. According to his death certificate, George died from acute heart failure, essential hypertension, and generalized arteriosclerosis. He was cremated and buried in the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in Colma, San Mateo, California. His wife Lillian A. Garmeson died 25 Mar 1969 in San Francisco, California . It is not known where she was buried.
