Byng, late Leinster Regiment, formerly Lieutenant Royal Navy; born Southsea, Hampshire 26 October 1872; educated The Grange, Cowes, and by an Army tutor at Caen; gazetted 2nd Lieutenant, West Indian regiment 28 September 1895, promoted Lieutenant 14 October 1897 and Captain 27 June 1900, transferring to the Royal Fusiliers 16 March 1901; served in the South African War 1902, being employed in the Mounted Infantry; took part in the operations in Transvaal, Orange River Colony and Cape Colony, January to 31 May, 1902 (Queen’s medal with four clasps): was employed with the Egyptian Army from 3 November 1903 to 26 August 1905 and from 20 November 1908 to 19 May 1912, was Adjutant of the Special reserve; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, was killed in action at Vailly, during the Battle of the Aisne, 14 September 1914.
