He enlisted in November 1909, and at the outbreak of the war was serving in India. He took part in numerous engagements on the North West Frontier, and also in Afghanistan in 1919. He was afterwards transferred to Egypt, where he was still serving in 1920.
He holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals, also the Indian General Service Medal (with clasp Afghanistan N.W. Frontier 1919).
