Founder of the House of Valois.
Aspired to be king, Pope Martin IV recognized him as King of Aragon, however this did not come to be. Was a good military leader including taking Guyenne and Flanders from King Edward II in 1324. His son Philip VI did become King of France.
He was opposed to the torture of Jacques de Molay, grand master of the Templars.
