Also called Gerard d’Alsace.
Count of Metz and Chatenois from 1047 to 1048, became Duke of Upper Lorraine when his brother died.
One of the leaders of the Papal coalition in the Battle of Civitae June 18 1053 in southern Italy. It was a Norman victory and Gerard was taken prisoner. However he returned to Lorraine.
Possibly poisoned while trying to stop a revolt.
