Captured by the Vikings in 859 when out of his kingdom, who were paid a large ransom.
Along with his ally Ordono I of Asturias in about 859, won the Battle of Monte Laturce also known as the Battle of Albelda against the Muslims. This provoked a raid the next year by Mohammed I of Cordoba which resulted in the capture of Garcia’s son Fortun
