Participated in the First Crusade of 1096, along with his brothers Godfrey of Bouillon and Baldwin I of, both of whom became rulers of Jerusalem.

Gained notoriety during the Siege of Jerusalem.
Commanded a division of the crusader army in the Battle of Ascalon.
After his brothers had died he was offered the kingdom of Jerusalem. He travelled to Apulia before learning a distance relative had been crowned instead. He returned to Boulogne.
Retired as a monk.
