Notes for Gospatric Earl Of Northumbria
Earl of Northumbria or Bernicia.
Great-grandson of Ethelred II (the Unready)
Gospatric had a plausible claim to Bernicia and offered William the Conquerer money for the Earldom. However he later lost the earldom when he and others rebelled against the king. After fleeing to Scotland, then Flanders he returned and was granted a castle at Dunbar by King Malcom III, his cousin.
