Known as Roger filius Episcopi, meaning son of a bishop. His mother was niece of Gunnora, wife of Richard I of Normandy
When French armies led by Odo, brother of King Henry I of France, Duke William II of Normandy sent his general Roger to oppose them. Roger was victorious and occupied the castle in Mortimer, Seine-Maritime. Roger then assumed the name Mortimer.
