Ebenezer Fiscus Dead
Well Known Citizen, Veteran of the Civil War, Dies at Home of Relative - Funeral October 19.
Ebenezer Fiscus, 86 years old, a veteran of the Civil War and for most of his life a resident of Owen county, died Oct. 18 at the home of Jud Fiscus following a short illness. He was at the Jud Fiscus home on a visit when he became ill. He had, however, been in failing health for some time.
He was a man of unquestioned integrity and stood high in the esteem of his acquaintances. He gave his best years in the service of his country in the Civil war and his later years the memories of his army service were precious to him. He enjoyed mingling with his old comrades and talking over the days of camp and campaign.
Mr. Fiscus was always of a jolly disposition looked at the bright side of life and always had a good work for everyone.
Following the death of his wife last spring he had made his home among his children. Funeral services conducted by Rev. W. S. Hastings were held at Dutch Bethel church, Oct. 19 and the crowd that attended testified to the high standing of Mr. Fiscus in that neighborhood. The following obituary was read at the service.
Ebenezer Fiscus was born June 22, 1840 and departed this life at the home of Jud Fiscus, near Arney, October 18th., 1926, aged 86 years, 3 months and 26 days. He enlisted in the 59th Indiana Volunteers Oct. 10th., 1861 and served his country until April 1st. 1865 when he received his discharge.
In June 1866 [should be 1867], he was united in marriage to Marilda Hauser, who departed this life April 14th. 1926. To this union were born nine children [actually 10] as follows: Rhoda (deceased), Sarah I., Jennie, Morton, Calvin, Lizzie, James A., Benjamin H., Ira Chase and Sherman T. Fiscus. He leaves eight children, twenty-three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of friends.
Ebenezer Fiscus was a son of Jacob and Jane Fiscus, a pioneer family of this county. Of his family of thirteen children, three brothers and one sister are still living. Mr. Fiscus was a good citizen and neighbor and will be greatly missed in the community where he lived for so many years.
