British historian and academic. Educated at Felsted School in Essex and Keble College, Oxford. From 191 to 1913, he was the Professor of History at Trinity College, Dublin, and was then a Fellow and Tutor at Trinity College, Oxford until 1938, when he became the President of that College. During the First World War, he served in the War Trade Intelligence Department. Between 1928 and 1937, he was the editor of the Dictionary of National Biography.
