Notes for Niall of the Nine Hostages High King of Ireland
Niall “Noigiallach” (meaning having 9 hostages)
Presumed to have been a historical person. All sources agree he died outside Ireland, perhaps on a raid in Britain. Since the annals give a wide range and inconsistant dates it is not possible to give acurate dates for his reign. Scholar Francis J. Byrne suggests his death date is about 452.

My paternal haplogroup is R-M269 which is relatively rare. 23andMe indicates 1 in 5100 of their male customers share this haplogroup. This haplogroup occurs frequently in male members of the Ui Neill clan with roots in north-west Ireland who claim descent from Niall Glundub (from whom they take their name) and by extension to Niall of the Nine Hostages. Although my line of descent shown on this site
is not my paternal line, it is
possible (but a long way from certain) my paternal line extends back to north-west Ireland and the time of Niall.
