Donn Whyddon Thomas
(1929 - 2013)Donn passed away in Eugene on December 21, 2013. He was born in Seattle on Flag Day, June 14th, 1929. As a child he thought the flags were for him! His parents were Innes and Ted Thomas. He moved to Eugene in 1946 & graduated from Eugene High in 1947. He graduated from the University of Oregon where he was a member of the ATO fraternity and the Oregon Yell Team. He met his wife Mary Moser at Oregon and they were married in 1952.
After a time in Baltimore and Seattle with the US Army, Donn & Mary moved back to Eugene where they raised their family. Dondo, as everyone knew him, worked in the lumber industry most of his career. He co-founded Guitteau-Thomas Lumber Co. and later Thomas Forest Products. After 'retiring' he spent ten years working for Tyree Oil Co.
He was a member of the Eugene Country Club, serving as Club President in 1984. He was also president of Oregon Club in 1979. As a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Donn served on the vestry. He and Mary have been members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church since moving to the Sheldon area in 1977.
A lifelong fan of the Oregon Ducks, the San Francisco Giants & later the Atlanta Braves, he also enjoyed golfing, cooking and spending winters in Palm Desert, CA.
Donn leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Mary, children Patty (Loren) Baker and Donn (Janice) Thomas, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: Kristen Baker, Ryan (Donnell) Baker and their son Evan, Ben (Robin) Thomas, Annie (Schuyler) King, & Nick Thomas.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Farmington Square for their amazing care of Donn these past two years.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on January 10 at 1:00 PM. Memorial gifts may be made to the St. Thomas Memorial Fund, 1476 Coburg Rd, Eugene, OR 97401.
