Obituary
Dundee Courier - September 23 1922
Noted Kirkaldy Man, Dead
Mr William Black of Chapel
The death occurred with startling suddenness yesterday of Mr Wm. Black of Chapel, Kirkaldy. The deceased was laid aside about a week ago with a heart seizure, from which, however, he was thought to be making a satisfactory recovery, but a relapse occurring early yesterday morning, he gradually sank.
A native of Udny, Aberdeenshire, he proceeded to Glasgow at an early age to follow a business career, and after being employed for some time in a stockbroker’s office, he was for many years connected with the publishing firm of Messrs. Wm. Collins, Sons & Co. rising to the position of secretary of that company, and ultimately to be a Director. In 1892 he was married to Miss Catherine Nairn, the eldest daughter of the late Sir Michael Nairn, and in 1893 he came to Kirkaldy, and was made Director of the linoleum firm when it was incorporated as a limited company.
Public Service
The late Mr Black always took a keen interest in public affairs. For a short time he was a member of the Town Council of Kirkaldy, but he devoted his attention chiefly to parochial affairs, and it was through his efforts the scheme for the amalgamation of the parishes of Kirkaldy, Abbotshall, and Dysart was brought about and Kirkaldy and Dysart Parish Council formed. He was the chairman of the Board almost since its inception. He was always prominently identified with work among the young, and was president of the Y.M.C.A. and chairman of the Public Recreation Rooms. His interest was also displayed in the welfare of the community by the prominent manner in which he was identied with the Kirkaldy Savings Bank, and it may be added he was chairman of the Management Committee.
Deceased was an elder of St Brycedale U.F. congregation, of which he was also treasurer, and an ardent Liberal in politics.
Some 65 years of age, he leaves a widow and family of two sons and five daughters to mourn his loss.
