It would appear shortly after being married Myra and her husband moved to the Philippines where son Edward was born. Myra returned to Horsforth so Edward could go to school while living with Myra’s parents. Myra would have returned to the Philippines where Wendy would be born. It seems Cyril was a manger of food stores for Nestle Milk Company. About 5 weeks before WWII broke out the family returned to Horsforth and reunited with son Edward. About 7 weeks after the war broke out the whole family returned to the Calinog, Iloilo, Panay Island, Philippines. This turned out to be a fatal decision as the Japanese invaded the Philippines starting on December 8, 1941 and were in full control by May 8, 1942. I’m not sure why the family is assumed to have died on or after January 5 1944. Perhaps that was the last date family heard from or about them.

And then, in December 1943, things got worse. In that month, the Japanese occupiers announced that “any American found in the [Philippine] Islands, whether unsurrendered soldier or civilian, will be summarily executed.”
[Note another article implies foreigners whether American or others were in a similar situation.]
The following describes the fate of a group of American on Panay Island.
From https://historynet.com/moving-target/
If Covell made one more plea for mercy that afternoon, it fell on deaf ears. He did ask for time to pray, and Watanabe acceded. The group of 17 joined in a circle and began their prayers. After about an hour they finished with a hymn, then told their executioner they were ready. One by one, beginning with Charma Covell, the adults were led to a clearing in a bamboo thicket. Paterno Enano, a Filipino forced into service as an interpreter to the Japanese, was a reluctant witness to the massacre: “I heard Mrs. Covell beg Captain Watanabe for mercy. She said, in Japanese, ‘Captain Watanabe, why will you kill us? We are Christian missionaries.’ Captain Watanabe smiled, and said nothing. I saw Captain Watanabe draw his Samurai sword. Then I turned my head, I could not bear to watch it. Mrs. Covell screamed.”
The three children, Douglas Rounds, Johnny Clardy, and Terry Clardy, were spared beheading. Instead, they were bayoneted. Then most of the bodies were dragged into houses, which were set afire. Pillaged and burned, Hopevale was abandoned by Watanabe and his troops three days after their arrival.

MESSAGE 48  Subject: Cyril Shrubsole      Author:  Dave Newton   21 Mar 2006
Does anyone know of a Cyril Shrubsole who married a Myra Newton in about 1928 in Horsforth, Yorkshire, England.
It is possible that Cyril died in about 1943 with his family at the hands of the Japanese occupying forces.
I am related to Myra and researching my Newton family tree.

Just to clarify - Cyril is believed to have died with his family in the Philippines
Subject: Cyril Shrubsole and Myra Newton   Author:  Andrew Harrison  4 Jun 2014 Hi Dave,
Just discovered your posting through a google search.
Myra Newton is my 1st cousin 2x removed her father Edward Holdsworth Newton being my great grand uncle.
I was told that Cyril, Myra and their children ( Edwin Wendy and maybe another child) were killed by the Japanese in Calinog ,Philippines on or around 5th January 1944. My mother was told that the family were hiding and it was the sound of the baby crying that gave them away to the Japanese. I have trying to find out more information about them for a couple of years without success. Have you found any more information about them since you made this post in 2006?  Regards  Andrew Newton Harrison
What a very sad story.  I found their marriage in 1928 Wharfedale, Yorkshire & found them living with Myra’s family in the 1939 census.  Definitely more research needed here.  Sandra Collins 27 May 2021
