Clive Cruddas was an officer with the 9th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusilers which was a Machine Gun Battalion at the time. They were on their way to the Middle East but were diverted to bolster the defences of Singapore, arriving February 6, 1942. They were a part of the 18th Infantry Division, III Indian Army Corps which fought in the Battle of Singapore February 8 to 15, 1942, The British Empire forces surrendered February 15, 1942 with about 80 000 soldiers becoming Prisoners of War. On October 10, 1942 Captain Henry McCreath, Lieutenant Cruddas, CSM Mather and 43 Fusliers were sent as forced labour to work on the the Burma Railway. A description of what Captain Henry McCreath’s endured as a Far Eastern Prisoner of War can be found at: https://www.roll-of-honour.org.uk/m/html/mccreath-henry.htm. It would seem Clive Cruddas’ experience would be similar as they appear to have been together for at least the first year.
