The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, Utah, January 11, 1943
Death Claims LDS Leader, Dry Farming Expert
James W. Paxman, 81, one of the states foremost advocates of dry farming and for 10 years a land appraiser for the federal land bank of Berkeley, California, died Sunday morning at the family residence 1413 Westminster avenue. He suffered a heart attack several weeks ago and later caught an acute case of influenza.

For many years Mr. Paxman was a prominent business man and L.D.S> church worker in central and southern Utah. He assisted greatly in the development of dry farming in Juab county, and for more than 20 years was operator of a mercantile business at Nephi and Eureka.

Mr. Paxman was born in Salt Lake City, October 12, 1861, a son of William and Ann R. Keys Paxman, four weeks after his parents arrived in Salt Lake valley by ox team. He attended Brigham Young academy.

Becoming interested in dry farming in Juab county, he cultivated 1300 acres of what had been formerly brush land. He was made head of dry farm development in the extension division of the Utah State Agricultural college in 1914, and served in this capacity until 1918.

Mr. Paxman filled two missions in England for the L D S church. He served as counsellor to his father in the Juab presidency for six years, and in December, 1987, was made president of the stake.

On August 9, 1914, he was ordained a patriarch in the church. He also was Highland stake work director in the L D S welfare program.

He married Julia Sudbury, March 1, 1888, in the Logan L D S temple. His wife died three years ago.

Surviving are four sons, J. Walter, Clarence and William Paxman of Salt Lake City; four daughters, Mrs. Vera P. Howell, Mrs. Julia Sloan, Mrs. Louise Pyper and Mrs. Emma Kingsford of Salt Lake City; two brothers Edward Paxman of American Fork and Albert R. Paxman of Salt Lake City; a sister, Mrs. Alice McCune of Nephi, and 28 grandchildren.
