MRS. EMILY HARTMAN, PIONEER OF VALLEY, PASSES AWAY NAPA, CALIF. AT ADVANCED AGE FROM FALL HURT.

Another of Montrose Pioneer residents, a woman beloved by all who knew her - Mrs. Emily J. Hartman passed away at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at Napa, Calif., where she had been since Christmas visiting her sisters, Mrs. Julia Braun and Mrs. Estella Case.

Three weeks ago her son, Ed R. Hartman, went to visit her at Napa. Two hours after the party arrived, Mrs. Hartman stumbled and fell over a suitcase breaking a hip. Prior to this her health had been good altho she was frail. The accident proved to be fatal as her life was despaired of from the start. She gradually grew weaker and passed away as stated.

In the meantime Ed Hartman returned to Montrose leaving Mrs. Hartman to nurse her. Her other two sons, Joe and Sid, also went to Napa to see their mother, spending several days there. But Realizeing there was nothing more they could do for her, they started home over the weekend and are expected home at any time now.

Mrs. Harman was a native born westerner, a pioneer, and her life was spent on frontiers enduring the hardships and privations of the frontier life. Born in Salt Lake City, Feb. 26, 1859, she was 77 years of age at the time of her passing. Her maiden name was Emily Sudburry. She left Salt Lake City with her mother when very young, going to Boulder, Colo., where they lived for a short time and thence to the San Luis valley living many years at Saguache, which was then a frontier settlement. She was married in 1877 to F. J. Hartman, Sr. The family lived in the San Luis valley until 1893 when they spent one summer in the Muddy region and then went to Riverside where they operated the sanitarium for a number of years. Most of the time from 1912 to 1916 was spent in the Paradox valley with a colonization project, again on the frontier.

Then they returned to Montrose, Mr. Hartman passing away in 1918.

Mrs. Hartman is survived by three sons, Edw. R., F. Joseph and Sidney C., all of Montrose, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Julia Braun and Mrs. Estella Case of Napa, Calif.; Mrs. Molly Emory, Los Angeles; Will Goodaker, Placerville, Calif.; Chas Goodaker, Ouray, Colo., and Mrs. Lulu Case of Durango.

Mrs. Hartman was one of God’s noblewomen, devoting her entire life to others, being of an unusually sumpathetic nature, always going about doing good. In addition to ministering to the sick at the Sanitarium, she nursed for many years in homes and possessing a most unselfish nature. was always seeking opportunities to aleviate the sufferings, sorrows and burdens of others.

Born in the west, she was a typical westerner and spent her entire life in the west that she loved. Her life was a continual benediction, filled with good deeds.
The remains will be returned here for the funeral services and interment.
