Well-Known Pioneer of Innisfail Dies
John Frederick (Jack) Miller, pioneer Iniisfail resident, died recently in Innisfail Hospital.
Funeral service was held in Innisfail and burial was in the cemetery there.
Mr. Miller was born in Harrison, Ontario and came from Crystal, North Dakota in 1892. He attended school there with his brother William, in what is believed to be one of the first classrooms in Alberta.
As a young man he worked for the CPR and later followed the blacksmith trade. Active in the community throughout his life, he was instrumental in organizing the fire brigade and was a charter member of the brigade. On many occasions he and his fellow volunteers manned the old horse-drawn fire pump recently donated to the Reynolds museum in Wetaskiwin.
In 1907 Mr. Miller was a member of a team which won the provincial hose laying title in competition with the fire departments throughout the province.
Mr. Miller was a charter member of the Macabee lodge in Innisfail: It was organized in 1900.
He had a perfect attendance record at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede attending every edition of the show since 1912.
Active in promoting wrestling and boxing in the area Mr. Miller also sparked the development of the first swimming pool at Mud Lake.. He was enthusiastic about hockey, too and made many trips to neighbouring towns, often by horse-drawn cutter to play a game with the Innisfail team.
For many years Mr. Miller operated his own drawing business in Innisfail and for 22 years he was projectionist at an Innisfail movie house.
Paying tribute to his early work with the Innisfail fire brigade, a guard of honour from the department stood at the graveside in Innisfail cemetery and firemen acted as pallbearers at his funeral.
Mr. Miller is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Edith) Wolfe of Rosscarrock; Mrs. Irvin (Mary) Kassa of Innisfail; a brother, William, Wenatchee, Washington; and two grand-daughters and two great-grandsons.
