From The Garmeson Family Tree at ancestry by Garmeson
Bertram John Deakin Garmeson was born 03 Feb 1891 in San Francisco, California, to John Deakin and Emily Maud Garmeson. His nickname was “Bertie”. The family lived at 265 Gleason Avenue, San Francisco at that time. By 1900, the family had moved to 3526 21st Street, San Francisco, according to the 1900 Federal Census record.

There is no documentation regarding Bertram until the 1910 Federal Census record. He was 19 years old at this census taking, and had started as an apprentice to a house painter. He was still living with his parents and siblings at a new address of 55 Alpine Street, San Francisco.

Bertram’s father had died in 1911, when Bertram was 20 years old. Then he lost his mother in January of 1917, so Bertram had to move in with his sister Beatrice at 838 Broderick Street, San Francisco.  He was employed as a house painter. In 1917 Bertram filed a Draft Application, required of able bodied men at the onset of World War I. Bertram was described as being medium height, medium build, having blue eyes and brown hair. When asked if there were any reasons for exemption, he wrote the statement ” Attending to sick brother”. Since his brother George had been hospitalized in the California State Hospital at this time, and had been discharged in April of 1917, he must have been the brother Bertram was referring to.

The 1920 Federal Census record showed that Beatrice Garmeson, and her brothers, Bertram, George and Russell were all living at the same residence at 838 Broderick Street. Bertram was employed as a house painter. An article appeared in the Oakland Tribune on 08 Sep 1921 naming Bertram Garmeson as one of the runners in a marathon race. He was running independently, and not associated with an specific organization. His brother George was also interested in marathon racing. In 1928, at age 37, Bertram married Mabel Bertha (last name unknown).  She was born 30 Aug 1895 in San Francisco, California, so was 33 at the time of their marriage. They moved to 349 27th Avenue, San Francisco, and were still living there at the time of the 1930 Federal Census-taking. Both Mabel and Bertram were registered Democrats, according to the California Voters Record. Throughout the 1930’s, Bertram and Mabel changed addresses fairly often, but Bertram remained employed as a house painter. Mabel died 02 Feb 1941. Her death notice appeared in the Oakland Tribune dated 03 Feb 1941. It was also recorded in the California Death Record. This was a tragic year for Bertram, who also lost his oldest sister Beatrice, on 09 June 1941.

In 1942, Bertram moved to 1467 8th Avenue, San Francisco. Although he was 51 years old, he was still required to file a World War II Draft Registration Application. The date of the record was 02 Apr 1942. He listed his brother George as his closest relative. He was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 180 pounds, had blue eyes and brown hair, with no obvious physical characteristics.

In 1948 Bertram married Frances Pearl Coleman. She was born 05 Oct 1891 in Santa Cruz, California. They were both 57 years of age at the time of their marriage. They resided at 1880 9th Avenue, San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Directory. They remained married until Bertram’s death on 18 Jan 1952. His death notice was printed in the Oakland Tribune dated 23 Jan 1952. Bertram died from a myocardial Infarction. His death certificate also noted that he had coronary artery disease and generalized arteriosclerosis. He was cremated, and buried at the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo, California.

After Bertram’s death, his wife, Frances Pearl Garmeson, never re-married. She had moved to 126a Sudden Street in Santa Cruz, California,, according to the Santa Cruz Directory listings. The Social Security Death Record shows that she died 23 Mar 1970 in Santa Cruz, Mateo, California. It is not known where she was buried.
