Military
He went with his regiment to the British Expeditionary Force which was sent to Europe. He was captured in France at Dunkirk. He was captured by the Germans and he was made to walk from Dunkirk through Poland and into Germany. He was a German POW
In Germany he was a P.O.W. until the end of the war. When he was liberated by British troops. He had lost half his body weight because he had been starved. He refused to work so they beat him. He was in very poor condition.
When the war ended the guards left the prison and the men had to make their own way home. They passed a British Major who arranged transport for Ron and his regiment to get home. They thought he was would die because he was so malnourished.
