Dorothy Ida Pamela Draper (Evans) 1910 - 2003

The 1911 Census states that Roland, 34, living on private means, Dorothy, 22, and six months old baby Dorothy, were living at The Rookery, Norley, Cheshire. During the war Roland served in the Royal Navy as a paymaster.

On the 14th November a man and a woman were found shot in hotel room at the South Western Hotel, in Southampton. The man was dead but the woman was alive though in a critical condition. It was thought that the couple were Mr. and Mrs. Roland Draper, even though they used fake names when signing the register book. The man did indeed turn out to be Roland Draper but the woman was not Mrs. Draper, who at that time was lying ill, and had been for the past six-months, in a nursing home in another part of the country.

RIDDLE OF SHOT PAIR ENDED - Daily Herald - 23rd November 1931
***************************************************************
A story of a man who was cited as a co-respondent but never divorced by his wife lies behind the finding of him shot dead at a Southampton hotel along with a wounded woman. Although the couple were "identified" last Wednesday as Mr. and Mrs. Roland H. Draper, the full facts are as told below.

The man, Mr. Roland Herbert Draper, was married at Chester Cathedral on May, 24th 1909, at the age of 32, to Miss Dorothy Forster Bell, the 21 year old daughter of Mr. Charles Bell. Mr. Draper was described as a bachelor, of Abbey Street, Chester, and a solicitor by profession. His father was Mr. Edward Herbert Draper, a barrister. There is no record of the marriage having been dissolved and Mrs. Draper is still living.

The injured woman, Gladys Tresidder (nee Lacey), was formerly the wife of Major George William Tresidder. This marriage was dissolved on the husband's petition in December 1920. "Peter" Draper, a paymaster in the Navy, being co-respondent. There were three sons from the marriage.
*****************************************************************
Roland was apparently legally separated from Dorothy after he and Gladys became an item. It was said that they adored and doted on each other, they were together for about sixteen years. One newspaper articled stated that Roland had been having trouble with his eyesight and he was eventually told that he was going blind and there was nothing the doctors could do to prevent it. The article suggested that this was the reason Roland took his own life, and Gladys not wanting to live without him decided to go with him.

To this day nobody knows the truth of what happened exactly or why. We will never know whether Roland shot Gladys and then himself, or if they shot each other, or if they shot themselves. Gladys never gave an explanation of what happened, she apparently refused to talk about it, ever.

Although Gladys survived the shooting, the bullet damaged her spine. She spent the next two years in hospital, in March 1932, she was removed from the Royal Hospital at Southampton to Basford Infirmary in Nottinghamshire where she died on the 16th December 1933, at the age of 45, her death was due to paralysis resulting from an injury to her spine.

Roland died aged 55.
He was laid to rest before the 24th November, only two people were there to mourn his loss neither of whom gave their identity.
