A big question to me is why is a foot solder, a private no less, on a horse? Perhaps he was a courier.
Note he is wearing spurs, not the usual issue for foot soldiers, and some sort of braid on his left shoulder.

Since Arthur's shoulder shows a lance corporal’s stripe this must have been taken before his Corps was shipped to Scotland. 1941. Possibly June, 1941
