William HOWKINS
William HOWKINS
Billingsgate_1720
Billingsgate area in 1720
where 3 Great Grandfather William Howkins was an orange merchant by at least 1814.
Highlighted
1. Botolph Lane where he lived and conducted business as did several other orange merchants.
2. St George’s Church [labeled 22] where family members were baptised and buried. St George was built of stones salvaged from Old St. Paul’s after the Great Fire of 1666. The Great Fire started at Pudding Lane the next street west of St. Botolph Lane. St. George’s has since been torn down and it would seem the family graves would now be lost.
3. Billingsgate which was a fish market and where the ships arrived from Spain with the oranges, lemons, limes and other fruits and nuts.
4. London Bridge
At the top you will see the end of Lombard Lane. 3 Great Grandfather Robert Gibson had an office on this street, although his main business was located in Calcutta. 2 of Robert Gibson’s daughters married 2 of William Howkins sons.
Billingsgate dock 1736
Billings Gate Dock in 1736
It probably was much the same in the 1820’s and just as busy. The fish market still exists today.
