Presumably Jarvis’ father Thomas Ogden dies sometime in this period. Since Thomas Ogden is a common name in Manchester I have insufficient information to determine which of the many Thomas Ogdens who die in the Manchester area is him. It is also possible he did move to India with his family and he died enroute or shortly after arriving.

Jarvis’ mother Ann Ogden and her living children emigrate to India in about 1860. Jarvis would be about 10 years old.

Elizabeth Martin Coupe is born in Egmanton, Nottinghamshire. Her mother Susannah Coupe is about 21 years old and is not married. There is no father’s name on the birth certificate but Samuel Martin is stated as her father on her marriage documents.

Elizabeth’s mother Susannah Coup age 22 unmarried and a waitress is living in Manchester with her parents and most of her siblings. One of Susannah’s siblings is Betsy Coup who is only 1 month older than Elizabeth.
Jarvis, his mother, and his siblings do not appear in this census as they are in India.

Jarvis’ mother Ann Ogden marries widower Nathaniel Wood in India. Nathaniel originally a shoemaker was in 60th Kings Royal Rifles. Nathaniel’s first wife had died 4 months earlier.

Jarvis age 60 is now a police pensioner. Elizabeth is age 50. The children living with them are son Jarvis age 23 police constable, son Louis age 18 grocer’s assistant, daughter Hilda age 15, machinist, son Arthur age 13, daughter Olive age 11. The record states they had 10 children born alive and 7 still living. Therefore there is one more child I haven’t found a record for who died young.
Son Ernest age 25 is with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment in Kamptee, India (now Kamptee, Maharashtra, India).
Can’t find son Maurice in the census.

Son Ernest Ogden is wounded in action in France. He returns to England 3 days later. He is discharged from the army as permanently unfit on June 17 1915.

Son Arthur Ogden enlists in the 1/6th Manchester Regiment shortly after turning 18. Son Louis Sydney Ogden is also in the army with the Nortumberland Fusiliers. I have been unable to find Sydney’s enlistment date and locations, however he did receive the 1914-15 Star so he would have been in the army in those years. Thus in 1915 four of Jarvis and Elizabeth’s five sons were in the army.

Son Arthur Ogden arrives in Gallipoli. Later his unit is sent to Egypt and afterwards shipped to France.

Son Ernest Ogden dies suddenly at age 29, most likely as a result of his wounds. He is buried in the Southern Cemetery. He leaves a wife of 8 1/2 months, Gertrude. Gertrude gives birth to a daughter Marjorie the same day.

She is survived by 6 of her 9 children and at least 4 grandchildren, possibly 7 or more. One of her grandchildren, Gloria Ogden is born in Canada and another, Walter Ogden will emigrate there as a young man. She is predeceased by grandaughter Marjorie Ogden and possibly others.

It is also possible he did move to India with his family and he died enroute or shortly after arriving.

Jarvis, his mother, and his siblings do not appear in this census as they are in India.

The record states they had 10 children born alive and 7 still living. Therefore there is one more child I haven’t found a record for who died young.
Son Ernest age 25 is with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment in Kamptee, India (now Kamptee, Maharashtra, India).

Son Arthur Ogden enlists in the 1/6th Manchester Regiment shortly after turning 18. Son Louis Sydney Ogden is also in the army with the Nortumberland Fusiliers. I have been unable to find Sydney’s enlistment date and locations, however he did receive the 1914-15 Star so he would have been in the army in those years. Thus in 1915 four of Jarvis and Elizabeth’s five sons were in the army.
