His brother Paul, several of their relatives, including my grandmother, were to sail on the Titanic but had to cancel as one of the group had a baby two days before sailing. As well, his oldest brother Charles, a young apprentice seaman, was lost at sea when his ship the Knowsley Hall disappeared at sea.]

Homer, a gentleman well-known as a sincere friend and warm supporter of the temperance movement, and whose earnest endeavours in promoting the cause of in this neighbourhood, the Sedgley Temperance Society owes its prosperous condition . . .

A member of a family connected with Sedgley as far back as 1278 when records show that they came north from Dorset died at West Bromwich last night.
He was Rev. F. A. Homer retired Unitarian Minister. Mister Homer was 72 [This doesn’t match his birth date] and lived at ?????, West Bromwich and was a popular and well known figure in the Midlands.
He was a son of the late Mr. F.A. Homer of Sedgley and Brother to Alderman J.T. Homer, who died at Dormston, Sedgley, two years ago.
According to records the Homer family ?? of Royal descent dating back to Edward III, and Mr. Homer whose hobby was genealogy proved his descent from 13 Knights of the Garter. [See my list. http://kimsimmonds.net/other_pages/list-kg.htm]

Educated at Durham University for the Church of England, Mr. Homers religious views changed so strongly during a health visit to Australia that on his return, after six years, he resigned from the Church of England and was the first family to join the Unitarian Church.
He had the distinction of being twice the same minister of the same church at West Bromwich – the Lodge Road Unitarian Church. He first came to town in 18?? after 12 months training under a special foundation scholarship at Oxford.
Following the death of his father in 1901, he went to Canada for a 12 months stay with relatives and on returning to England accepted the living of Mary street Unitarian Church Taunton but the district did not suit his health and a serious illness compelled his removal.
BACK TO OLD CHURCH
In 1907 he returned to his old church at West Bromwich and remained there until he retired in 1933.
In his university days, Mr. Homer was a keen oarsman and was one of the first winners of the Senate Cup for Durham University at the regatta in 1889?
The local representative of the Royal College of Arms, London, Mr. Homer was also associated with the council of the William Salt Society, the Dugdale Society, and the Birmingham Archeological Society, the council of the Staffordshire Parish ?????? Society, the Worcestershire Historical Society and the Genealogical Society of London. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
Among his treasures were copies of all the publications of the Dugdale Society and of the William Salt Archeological Society of Staffordshire.
