Notes for Henry HUGHES
of Woodsetton House, Sedgley

From Archie Rawlson
His [Henry Hughs] first recorded Job at the age of 22 was a Carrier on a canal. During this time the 1851 census places Henry living with his brother-in-law Alexander Brodie Cochrane on Dudley Road in Kingswinford.

The 1861 census places Henry and Maria living in Buckpool in Worsdley, Kingswinford but at an unknown address. The house was presumably sizable given that Henry & Maria, 5 kids, Emma Badlands, a nurse and three servants lived there. Henry’s profession is stated as being that of a carrier. Presumably continuing to work in a capacity within the Cochrane enterprise (woodside iron works etc).

In around 1865 the Hughes moved into Woodsetton House on Tipton Road, Woodsetton.

A detailed description of the events from the Herald is below and it appears that Henry's neighbors B. Whitehouse and W. Fowler scooped up most of the prizes.
Notes for Maria (Spouse 1)
From Archie Rawson
Maria Badlands (1827-1894) was born on the 12th of February 1827 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Her parents were James [1783-1838] and Margaret Badlands (1785-1876) who were successful carpet manufacturers. They were members of a nonconformist church. This is presumably why Henry became a Unitarian unlike his ancestors up until this point who were members of the All-Saints Church of England.

The businesses main site was a 7-story mill which was located on the river Stour in Kidderminster. This was likely run by James Badlands. They also had a site on Castle Street, Holborn in London. This was likely run by the Watson family who lived at 36 (56) Holborn Hill.

Maria died on the 1st of May 1894.
