Notes for Clement HUGHES
Hughes Family History by Archie Rawson
Before Maria's death a shocking event occurred. This was the death of Clement. It was covered in 7 different newspapers. [not shown here]
On Saturday 22nd August 1891 Clement [Hughes] was found dead in the early hours of the morning in front of Woodsetton House (after recently returning from Australia).
Upon examination he was found to have a bullet wound in his temple and by the side of his corpse was a revolver loaded in several of the chambers.
It was stated that he had suffered from brain fever and for some time had been very melancholy. Three letters were found on his body giving instructions for his funeral. They also indicated that he was tired of life and that if he lived, he might go mad. He stated that he wished to be buried with his father Henry. A verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary insanity was returned.
