Notes for Sarah NUNNS
Timeline for Henry Lowe and his wife Sarah (nee Nunns)

1818 August 10
Sarah’s parents John Nunns and Mary Ann Field are married in Guiseley Parish, Yorkshire, England. John is about 20 years of age, born in Horsforth and is a carpenter. Mary Ann is about 22 years of age and was born in Quebec then known as Lower Canada.

1818 November 23 Henry’s parents Thomas Lowe and Sarah Scatchard are married in Otley, Yorkshire, England. Thomas is about 30 years of age, a coachman or groom and born in West Yorkshire. Sarah is 20 years of age and born in East Keswick, her father is a farmer.

1826 November 2 Sarah Nunns is born, probably in East Keswick, West Yorkshire. Her birth is registered in the Horsforth district. She is the fifth child, of seven in the family, all girls.

1829 May 7 Henry Lowe is born in Bramhope, Yorkshire (some census’ say East Keswick). He is the sixth and youngest child in the family.

1830 December 16 Henry’s father Thomas Lowe dies and is buried in Adel, Yorkshire. Henry’s mother Sarah Lowe has 6 children all under age of 12 to care for, including Henry not yet 2 years old.

1848 Approximately Ada Nunns is born, in Leeds. Her parentage is uncertain. Sometime after 1881 Ada begins using the name Ada Nunns Lowe. She might be 1) Sarah’s child, 2) both Sarah and Henry’s child or 3) a child of one of Sarah’s siblings and informally adopted by Sarah. Ada never married. She is buried in the same plot as Henry and Sarah and named her brother? Charles Lowe as her executor.

1851 March 30 Census

Sarah, age 24 is living with her father, mother, sister Jane and two of her parents’ grandchildren John Nunns, age 6 and Ada Nunns, age 3.

1851 September 29 Henry Lowe and Sarah Nunns are married in Leeds, Yorkshire. Henry is 22 and Sarah is 24.

1852 Daughter Elizabeth Lowe is born at East Keswick. Remarkably 2 baptisms of Elizabeth Lowe are recorded at East Keswick with the same parents and same minister 5 and a half months apart that year. Likely that is an error.

1853 April 2 Son William Scatchard Lowe is born in East Keswick. He is baptized August 7 by the same minister mentioned above.

1854 June 30 Daughter Edith Patience Lowe is born in East Keswick. She is baptized October 1. She will become like a mother to her nephew Percy Simmonds and known by his children, including my father, as Granny Jewell.

About 1876 About this time Henry is no longer a farmer. He no longer listed in the Land Tax Assessments. A family story says that Henry Lowe lost his farm land as a result of gambling. Whether this is actually gambling or a risky business venture which did not pan out is unknown. It would seem this lead to Henry and Sarah moving to nearby Leeds.

1879 April 14 Daughter Edith marries Albert Jewell a Warrant Officer in the Army Service Corps at Sheepscar, Leeds. Two months previously Albert left the 20th Hussars to join the ASC. The 20th Hussars would have been posted at the Chapeltown Cavalry Barracks in Leeds. Very shortly after they married Albert would be sent to Natal to participate in the short lived Anglo-Zulu War.

Joseph H. age 6
are all born at East Keswick are listed. No daughters are present.

A family story says that Henry Lowe lost his farm land as a result of gambling. Whether this is actually gambling or a risky business venture which did not pan out is unknown. It would also seem this lead to Henry and Sarah moving to Leeds and later parting ways after 1881. They are living apart, but still in Leeds by 1891.

In the 1881 census living at 24 Preston St., Leeds, York., England
Henry Lowe retired farmer age 57?, born Bramhope.
Wife Sarah Lowe age 53, born Horsforth.
Son Charles Lowe, unmarried age 22, Joiner, born East Keswick.
Son John F. Lowe, age 9, scholar, born East Keswick.

[Interestingly his age from the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1901 match. But differ by the same amount in the 1881 and 1891 census. Obviously the Henry Lowe in the 1881 and 1891 census is the same person as he lives at the same address and have the same birthplace. Also interestingly Henry claims to be a widower in 1891 and 1901 when his wife is still living and Sarah claims to be a widower in 1901 when her husband is still living. While I can’t exactly locate the Woods Buildings, perhaps they have been torn down, from the census they would have been within 0.35 miles of Royal Park Grove where Henry’s wife was living. There seems to have been a marital break.]
