From the Garmeson Family Tree at ancestry by Garmeson
Reginald Deakin Garmeson was born 24 May 1882 in Islington, Middlesex, England. In November 1882, Reginald immigrated to the United States with his parents and sister Beatrice, when he less than a year old. They lived in New York for a short time before moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1883. While they lived in Chicago, he gained a baby sister, Violet Deakin Garmeson, and a brother, George Deakin Garmeson. When Reginald was six years old, the family moved to California. They lived in Las Angeles, initially, before settling in San Francisco. Reginald became a big brother to two more siblings, Bertram Deakin Garmeson, in 1891 and Charles Russell Deakin Garmeson, in 1896.
Reginald’s work history and address history were annually recorded in the San Francisco Directory and the Federal Census Records. In 1900, Reginald was 18 years old and listed as entering the workforce as an office boy for the Graf Brothers Lumber Company. By 1901 he had been advanced to a clerk position at that company. In 1907-1909, the San Francisco directory showed he was living at 722 Duboce Avenue, and was working as a bottle labeler for the Shasta Water Company. When the 1910 census was recorded, Reginald was still single, and had moved to 55 Alpine Street, San Francisco. He was a clerk for the Dunham, Carrigan and Hayden Company. In subsequent years he worked as a salesman and bookkeeper for the H. M. Nagel Hardware Warehouse.
On 25 Jul 1907, Reginald Deakin Garmeson filed his Declaration of Intent for Naturalization to the United States at the age of 25. His certificate of Naturalization was dated 30 Dec 1914. This document provided additional information about him. It noted that he sailed from Liverpool, England on the SS Britanic on 20 Nov 1882 and arrived in New York on 30 Nov 1882. He was 5 ft. 9 inches tall, having blue eyes, and brown hair. He was living at 55 Alpine Street when he received his citizenship at the age of 32.
After his father, John Deakin Garmeson, died in 1911, Reginald’s mother Emily Maud, moved in with him. Then his mother, Emily, died 09 June of 1917. Reginald was now living alone. That same year, Reginald Deakin Garmeson married Hazel Ann Eaton on 16 Dec 1917, in Point Reyes, California. She was the daughter of Fredrick Milan Eaton and Allie (Crandall) Eaton.
With World War I imminent, all able bodied men were required to register in the military draft. In 1919, Reginald filed a draft registration form, which had him listed as living at 1711 Hayes Street, San Francisco, with his wife Hazel. He was listed as being of medium height, medium build, having blue eyes and brown hair. Under physical disqualifications, he was noted to have “a defect in his right eye”. He was not issued a draft card.
Reginald and Hazel had four children. Roy Fredrick was born in 1919, Verna Emily in 1922, Warren John in 1924 and Charles Reginald in 1927. The California Voter Registration listed Reginald as a Republican. By 1928, he had moved to 1490 Sanchez Street, San Francisco and was listed on the San Francisco Directory pages as working as a Janitor for the Brown and Brown Hardware store. From 1930 to 1933, he lived at 1522 Sanchez Street. In 1934, he moved to 480 30th Street, San Francisco until his death on 28 Jan 1937. He was still working as a janitor for Brown & Brown Hardware when he scratched his right hand on a price tag. The infection was not properly treated and got out of control, affecting his entire right arm. According to his death certificate, Reginald died from staphylococcus aureus infection of the right upper extremity, septicemia, and terminal Staphylococcal Pneumonia. He was 54 years old. He was cremated and buried in the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo, California. His obituary, dated 01 Feb 1937 listed him as “Ray” Garmeson, which was apparently his nickname.
