Major Edward Freeman, 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of Bryn Celyn, Pwllheli, who was killed in Flanders on March 3, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Freeman, of Thorn Bank, Malvern Wells and grandson of of the late Edward Augustus Freeman, Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford. He was born at Isleworth in 1875 and educated at Uppingham and Oriel College, Oxford. During the South African War he brought together and trained the Pwllheli Company of Volunteers, of which he was given the captaincy. At the outbreak of the war he was recalled to the depot at Wrexham to train recruits who afterwards formed the 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of which he was made adjutant, obtaining his majority on leaving for the front in September last. His commanding officer writes: - “His loss will be much felt in the battalion. He did his duty to the end and he died beloved and respected by all who knew him.” Major Freeman married in 1897 Katherine, only daughter of Major-General W. A. Gillespie, of Bryn Derwen, Usk. He leaves 3 sons, the eldest Harold Augustus, being in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and the youngest at Osborne.

Gordon Post was hit by a Howitzer shell at around midnight on March 3 1916. The Commanding Officer/his Second in Command and two other officers were killed along with 9 other ranks. The officers are buried at Spoil Bank Cemetery but all the others are only commemorated on the Menin Gate.

Death Of Mrs K M Ffoulkes
The death occurred at the home of her son at Fairham House Ruddington on Saturday of Mrs Katherine Margaret Ffoulkes daughter of the late Major-General Gillespie She was 83. Mrs Ffoulkes who was taken ill last Tuesday was an active woman. She was born in Kent For the past ten years she had lived at Wilford. Her first husband Major E Freeman served in the Army during the First World War She is survived by her sons Major Rollo Freeman who lives near Hereford, Commander Arthur Freeman of Parkstone Dorset ,and Major-General Harold A Freeman Attwood of Ruddington The funeral will take place at Ruddington to-morrow Wed on Saturday
