Edward Freeman, 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of Bryn Celyn, Pwllheli, who was killed in Flanders on March 3, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Freeman, of Thorn Bank, Malvern Wells and grandson of of the late Edward Augustus Freeman, Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford. He was born at Isleworth in 1875 and educated at Uppingham and Oriel College, Oxford. During the South African War he brought together and trained the Pwllheli Company of Volunteers, of which he was given the captaincy. At the outbreak of the war he was recalled to the depot at Wrexham to train recruits who afterwards formed the 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of which he was made adjutant, obtaining his majority on leaving for the front in September last. His commanding officer writes: - “His loss will be much felt in the battalion. He did his duty to the end and he died beloved and respected by all who knew him.” Major Freeman married in 1897 Katherine, only daughter of Major-General W. A. Gillespie, of Bryn Derwen, Usk. He leaves 3 sons, the eldest Harold Augustus, being in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and the youngest at Osborne.
