He volunteered in October 1915, and after a period of training was three months later sent to German East Africa. There he was in action in numerous engagements, and rendered valuable services conveying supplies to the forward areas, and proving of great assistance in bringing the wounded out of the danger zone. Demobilised on his return home in March 1919, he holds the General service and Victory Medals.
