Joining in November 1916, he embarked for the Western Front in the following April and did excellent work as a Lewis gunner in the Battles of Arras, Messines, Ypres and Lens. He was wounded in the latter engagement and invalided to England, and on his discharge was from hospital was retained on home defence duties. He was serving with the Seaforth Highlanders in Scotland in 1920, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals
