Lowes, Thomas Henry and Julia
Thomas Henry [should be Andrew] Lowes was born in Walsend [Wallsend], England, about 1872 [1871]. He came to Canada as a young man in the early 1890’s [1891], where in Manitoba he met and married Julia Amelia Ellen Crosby. They returned to England where the three oldest children John, Steve and Nellie (Mrs. Fouracres) were born.
Coming back to Canada around the turn of the century they arrived in the Tugaske district in 1903 where Mr. Lowes homesteaded the SW quarter 6-22-2 W3. He sold the farm and bought the Wm. Phair farm northeast of town and this was the family home for a number of years.
In the early days Tom dug wells by hand for a number of homesteaders to augment his income. Nine more children were born: Jennie (Mrs. Jim Phillips), Ethel (Mrs. Joe Tufty), Edith (Mrs. J. McCauley). Allen, Ruby (Mrs. R. Morrow), Charlie, Olive (Mrs. Trevor Lewry), Tom and Hilda.
The Lowes moved to Woodrow in 1921 where they were engaged in farming. Mrs. Lowes died in 1932. He retired in 1945, moving first to Regina and then to Moose Jaw. In 1960 Mr. Lowes remarried at the age of 88. He died in 1964.
The Lowes were Anglican, Mr. Lowes was active in the Orange Lodge.
