King of Hungary (and Croatia 1235 to 1270) and Croatia and Duke of Styria from 1254 to 1258.
Mongols invaded Hungary and annihilated his army in the battle of Mohi, April 11, 1241. Nearly half of the inhabited places in Hungary were destroyed in the invasion. He is sometimes known as the second founder of Hungary for his efforts to resettle depopulated areas. Built the fortress and palace around which the town of Buda was built.
